• Tracking energy-related indicators is essential to well-being in many ways. Energy production, distribution and consumption all contribute directly to Quebec's economic prosperity and international attractiveness, while meeting key social needs (heating, food, transportation, work, entertainment, etc.).

  • Energy is also an essential factor in tackling the climate emergency and reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The entire energy system has an environmental footprint in terms of its impact on biodiversity and resource extraction.

  • The indicators below and international comparisons show that

    • Quebec does particularly well when it comes to the use of renewable energies - a fact largely attributable to the historic decision to nationalize the production and distribution of hydroelectricity, Quebec's main source of energy.

    • On the other hand, our energy productivity lags far behind that of European countries. This poor use of energy is preventing us from accelerating a socially just and economically beneficial transition to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement.
