Low-income Earners, by MBM (Market Basket Measure)
In Quebec, based on the Market Basket Measure (MBM), the proportion of people with low income was nearly three times lower from 2015 to 2021. In Ontario, this proportion decreased by just over half during the studied period. In Canada, the proportion decreased by half during the same period. However, there was a slight increase in the number of people with low income in 2021 during the pandemic.

Methodological note
An absolute measure such as the Market Basket Measure (MBM) indicator assesses poverty, whereas a relative measure such as the Low Income Measure (LIM) is used to assess inequality.
In 2018, Statistics Canada launched a review of the MBM to ensure that it reflects the up-to-date cost of a basket of goods and services representing a modest, basic standard of living in Canada.
